Fine tuning the volume

GigaStudio gives you many tools to fine tune the sound and volume of a sample. Here are examples of two tools that will allow you to adjust the volume of one or multiple notes in the rank.  You may find that a note is way too loud or not loud enough. This is especially true with the pedals.  Because of the room’s acoustics, one note will be amplified or muted from your listening point. Another possible application might be to give your speaker (or subwoofer) a little boost to reach that low C.

Equalizer

In the input pane of Gigastudio, expand the rank by clicking on the header. In the lower right corner of that expanded view you will find the Equalizer tool.

Several kinds of equalizer functions can be selected (parametric, hi-pass, low-pass etc).  You may wish to experiment with it and see how each parameter modifies the sound. Keep in mind that the "simpler the better" and that you should only use EQ sparingly to correct sound anomalies caused by room or speakers.

As an example, say you have a rank where you feel the bass end is too loud.  You could   apply a Hi-pass filter (that allows higher frequency notes to pass through) from 120 hertz slopping to -12db down to 10 hertz. This example would result in a gradual decrease in volume for the lower octave. Click the “ON” button under the “HP” filter type and adjust the middle “FREQ Hz” slider.   Experiment until you achieve the desired results.

GigaEdit

Before experimenting with this tool, please make sure to backup the GIG file that you want to modify.

Sometimes a problem requires a more granular approach, a note by note fine tuning. In the MIDI Mixer pane, click the down arrow to the right of the rank in the Instrument list and select "Edit with Gigaedit". This will bring up GSEdit. Drag the mouse with the left button over the left and right regions in the Velocity sample pane so that both channels are selected. Likewise drag over the "Trem Off" and "Trem On" Mod Wheel dimensions and then the "Key Down" and "Key Up" Release Trigger dimensions so that all are selected. In the lower right, click the drop list of available parameters to select the "Mix/Layer" group. Select the first parameter, "Attenuation". A series of dots will appear along the bottom of the note regions. You can use the mouse to slide the dot upwards for each note, which will increase attenuation for that note. Click "Save" and exit.

By using GSEdit and the Equalizer you should be able to correct any dips or peaks in the sound of a rank caused by room or speaker response issues.
